Jenice Johnson
Jenice Johnson is the Community Engagement & Communications Specialist for Tanka Fund, where she helps tell the stories of Native Buffalo caretakers and the work to return Buffalo to Native lands, lives, and economies.
A longtime writer, journalist, photographer, and communications professional, Jenice got her start writing and editing for her college newspaper at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Communications in 2003. She went on to work in professional journalism, including at The Dallas Morning News, before moving into marketing and communications. She spent nearly eight years with a Native-led social enterprise focused on creating economic opportunities through Buffalo, an experience that also connected her to the early development of Tanka Fund and its mission.
After several years as an independent content creator and brand strategist, Jenice returned to Tanka Fund in 2024. Today, her role brings together community engagement, writing, photography, video, and social media — finding the stories worth telling and figuring out the best way to tell them.
Jenice lives in Arlington, Texas, where she is raising two daughters and, when she isn't working for Tanka Fund, is usually creating something. She is also the founder of Art Is Life Cafe, a creative and spiritual business that brings together her interests in writing, art, photography, and intuitive work. Outside of work, she enjoys a great cup of tea, road trips and following her curiosity wherever it leads.
