From New Zealand to Texas: A day of Indigenous connection
Chris Pogue of GP Ranch in Sulphur Springs, TX, teaches Piripi Kaiwaru Takurua from Aotearoa (New Zealand) about handling a horse.
The Tanka Team was recently invited to visit our rancher partners at GP Ranch in Sulphur Springs, TX, where we had the honor of meeting Piripi Kaiwaru Takurua and his family, who traveled all the way from the East Coast of Aotearoa (New Zealand). The family creates an ongoing online series documenting Piripi’s adventures around the world as he learns different trades, with his mother narrating his journey.
During their visit, they graciously shared their rich Māori heritage and traditions with us. Around the room, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, Lakota, Shawnee, and Delaware relatives were represented. It was a beautiful gathering of Indigenous peoples coming together to share a meal. After enjoying traditional dishes prepared by Theda Pogue and her family, we sat together to hear stories of culture, language, and history.
It became a truly special moment of Indigenous connection — listening, laughing, sharing, and honoring each other’s ways. We are deeply grateful to have been part of it.
