Celebrating culture and community at Indigenous Peoples Day

In true Tanka Fund fashion, our booth at Indigenous Peoples Day in downtown Rapid City, SD, was full of good energy — and plenty of giveaways! From classic merch to one of our Infinity Journey of the Buffalo blankets, we shared a little piece of our mission with everyone who stopped by.

One story stood out: a little girl spotted our blanket giveaway and insisted her dad sign up. He politely declined and started to walk away, but she had other plans. She ran back, wrote down his name herself, and wouldn’t you know it? She manifested that win! 🥹✨

Our Executive Director, Dawn Sherman, was just as thrilled as everyone else to see her determination pay off. It’s moments like these that remind us that the next generation gets it.

Another highlight came when a soon-to-be graduate stopped by to talk with our Range Ecologist Intern, Nicole Cournoyer, about pursuing a future in Native agriculture. Nicole shared encouragement and insights about caring for the land and restoring Buffalo to Native communities.

These connections — between generations, between people and the land — are what Tanka Fund is all about. Our mission is to create opportunities for the next generation to reconnect with traditional food systems and continue the work of restoration: for the land, the people, and the Buffalo. 🦬
