Tanka Fund team presents at North American Bison Summit
Earlier this month, members of our team and several of our rancher partners attended the North American Bison Summit — a leading gathering focused on Buffalo, healthy grasslands, and the families and communities who care for them.
During a roundtable at the conference, COO Arnell Abold emphasized Tanka Fund’s continued growth and unwavering mission to restore Buffalo to Native communities. In addition our rancher partner and board member Wayne Frederick spoke at the event.
Facilitated by the Wildlife Restoration Foundation (WRF) and supported by over 30 partners across North America, the summit was dedicated to strengthening models and methodologies for sustaining grasslands, wildlife, and Buffalo ranching.
Key outcomes and focus areas included:
Grasslands Health and Abundance: Advancing practices that sustain and grow healthy grasslands.
Wildlife and Grazing Benefits: Supporting both wild and managed grazers for thriving ecosystems.
Buffalo Culture Restoration and Food Sovereignty: Empowering Tribal and First Nations to restore Buffalo culture and strengthen food systems.
Herd Health and Conservation: Addressing bison disease mitigation, genetic variability, preservation of wild behaviors, and holistic herd care.
Resilience Against Environmental Challenges: Collaborating on solutions to drought, flooding, wildfire, invasive species, hay shortages, and rising land costs.
Celebrating Cultural Heritage: Uplifting the U.S. National Mammal while honoring the profound historical and cultural ties to Canada, Mexico, and Tribal/First Nations communities.
Rural Prosperity and Opportunity: Valuing and building upon the heritage of America’s Western landscapes and supporting rural communities.
The work shared and strengthened at the North American Bison Summit provides replicable, resourced models to ensure that Buffalo, grasslands, and rural prosperity thrive for generations to come. We’re proud to be part of this movement and look forward to applying what we’ve learned to our ongoing efforts.
